Absolutely Sovereign

All across the globe, we suddenly find ourselves in the midst of much uncertainty, news headlines that are rapidly changing and seem to only become more grim, and the realization that life can shift so suddenly and leave us feeling completely out of control. However, that last part is actually always true and it’s times like these that remind us that our feeling of control over our lives and the lives of those around us is really just a facade.

In reality, God is the absolutely sovereign One in complete control every day of our lives, whether we’re living just another “normal” day or there’s a worldwide pandemic.

What a comfort it is to know that none of what’s happening or is going to happen comes as a surprise to our omniscient God. He knows what He’s doing and we truly can rest in His wisdom and love during these times that it seems everything’s unraveling and when there are so many temptations to be anxious.

It’s also become such a great opportunity to love our friends and neighbors in very real, tangible, and creative ways.

Being homebound and unable to gather with the church or others in the ways we’re used to has given us the opportunity as a family to think of ways we can encourage and show our love and care for others and that’s been so much fun!

Here is a list of just a few ideas that we’ve come up with or seen others do:

  • Reach out to the elderly or “high risk” in your neighborhood and/or church and ask if you can pick up anything at the store for them.

  • Send a note or even a gift of encouragement to people in your church each week. It’s a great way to keep connected when you’re unable to gather together.

  • Purchase a meal for take out or delivery and offer to take it to a friend. Not only may you be helping someone in the midst of financial hardship, but you’re also supporting local businesses that are facing really tough times.

  • Being intentional to reach out (call or FaceTime) to friends and family, especially those that may be very lonely during this time of being more isolated from others.

  • Looking for ways to be purposeful with your children to show them what it looks like to show Christ-like love in practical ways, especially at times when the temptation can be to fret or grumble.

We have also decided to do a bunch of giveaways over the next several weeks. We’d LOVE to be able to play even a small part in keeping you encouraged by God’s Word during this time. We’ll be giving away different items each week and announcing the winners on Saturday via our newsletter.

Be encouraged, friends. God is on the throne and He’s got all of this under control. Keep praying for ideas to love and encourage all of those around you (and feel free to comment below and share your ideas with us)! There’s nothing like loving and serving others to turn our anxieties upside down and find deep and satisfying joy in the midst of these difficult times.

Also, we know that there may very well be some of you reading this who are personally facing unemployment, sickness, or other trials related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please know you are in our family’s thoughts and prayers.

Here is a sermon about the sovereignty of God in all things that was preached by our pastor and was very encouraging to us. (Sermon starts around minute 31)
